"The Art of Pilgrimage"
Phil Cousineau - The Riddle of
Ancient Stones, Giza, Egypt, 1974
According to the United Nations, tourism is now the number one
industry in the world. While tourists circumambulate the globe at record
rates, pilgrimage - the transformation journey to a sacred site - is
enjoying a revival not seen since the Middle Ages. Why are people
seeking out sacred travel? What distinguishes a pilgrimage from tourism?
How is the great round of the journey related to Jung's individuation
process? In this evening's presentation, best-selling author and
award-winning documentary filmmaker Phil Cousineau will give a
multimedia performance highlighting themes from his book, The Art of
Pilgrimage. His slides and discussion will survey several pilgrimage
models, including Aborigine, Native American, Islamic, and Christian, as
well as secular examples, such as meaningful visits to museums, artist's
homes, and battlefields. The presentation will also explore a
number of practices that can turn ordinary journeys into sacred travel,
and everyday life into a daily pilgrimage.
Saturday
Workshop

10:00am-5:00pm
"Once and Future Myths:
The Power of Ancient Stories in Modern Life "
When
he reached mid-life the Swiss psychologist Carl Jung found that he had
lost his way. He asked himself by what myth - what sacred and guiding
story - he was living and he found he did not know. So he made it the
prime task of his life to determine what story or stories were at the
core of his life.
In this workshop we will explore this same fundamental question of
human existence: What myths are we living by? What myths guide the
culture in which we live? What hidden myths are leading us forward - or
holding us back?
To examine these issues we will combine lively discussion with film
clips, slide shows, music, and brief writing exercises to explore the
implications of our personal mythology and that of the cultural
mythologies that we are immersed in. Our themes will include: myths of
creativity, myths of time, myths of love and romance, myths of the city
and the country, the beauty myth, sports myth, and the mythic quest.
Phil
Cousineau is a best-selling author, editor, photographer,
award-winning documentary filmmaker, adventure travel leader, and
independent scholar who lectures around the world on a wide range of
topics from mythology, mentorship, and soul. His books include Once and
Future Myths: The Power of Ancient Stories in Modern Life, The Art of
Pilgrimage, Soul Moments, Riddle Me This, and The Soul Aflame. A
protégé of the late Joseph Campbell, Cousineau is also the author of
The Hero's Journey: Joseph Campbell on His Life and Work. He lives in
San Francisco, California.
