Having a Dream That Changes Your Life

June 15 Saturday Lecture 7:30 pm

For both Freud and Jung, dreams offered an important access to unconscious life. But for Freud, the unconscious was regressive, a cauldron of repressed material. For Jung, the unconscious also was a font of creative coming-into-being—a mode of possible emergence rather than merely submergence. In this talk, I will consider this aspect of our unconscious life by reviewing phenomenological research on the experience of having a life transformative dream. For those who have had such a dream, it provided a larval possibility of a new way of being oneself, and at a time in one's life when one's old way of being was no longer viable.
