“Individuation does not shut one out from the world, but gathers the world onto oneself.” – C.G. Jung (CW 8, par. 432)
The world around us is changing and much of this change is due to human activity. Over time we have grown apart from Earth. We look upon our world as remote and inanimate, a material resource existing solely to support our needs. Carl Jung recognized the perils of living a one-sided life separate from the world. Ultimately, living this way leads to unconscious forces that are very destructive. Thus, in his later years, Jung spoke of healing our split with the natural world. In this presentation I will explore the psychological processes that have led to our split from the world and the current global environmental consequences of this split. I will then explore how Jungian psychology can lead us back to reconnecting with the world. In particular, I will describe how the archetype of opposites plays a central role in the process of healing our split with the world.
